Read more →The case studies live one tab over. This is the rest of it. Games I keep returning to, films I've watched more than once, books I read across to find patterns, projects I built on weekends to see if I could. None of it is professional. All of it is honest about how I actually spend my time.
I read film the way some people read literature — slowly, often the same one twice, looking for what the second watch reveals that the first hid. The actor I keep returning to is Christian Bale, and the scene I keep returning to within his work is from Hostiles. He finds the body of his oldest friend. He's a captain and a soldier, so the grief has to live entirely inside the restraint — no breakdown, no catharsis, just the face of a man holding it together because the job requires him to. Most actors choose roles that protect what audiences already think of them. Bale chooses roles that demand he disappear into them.
I read across history, philosophy, and cinema looking for patterns — how ideas, institutions, and aesthetic forms transform under the pressure of economics, social norms, and the zeitgeist of their century. Technology has driven much of the shift toward gender equality, but the change itself runs through philosophy, law, art, and lived experience before it shows up as a settled norm. Reading across the three domains in parallel surfaces those patterns in a way reading any one in isolation can't. I read Hindu mythology and Indian philosophy alongside the Western canon to find the corollaries — what each tradition surfaces that the other quietly skips.
The fictional character whose posture has shaped my own is Bruce Wayne. Not Batman as he's been recently flattened — violence-driven, brooding for its own sake — but Wayne across the older animated series and the comics: a person of incorruptible purpose toward the greater good, who could have spent his inherited fortune on himself and chose instead to put it and himself on the line for the city. He's the detective who reads, gathers data, and finds patterns. The businessman who built Wayne Enterprises into something larger. The inventor who learns, experiments, applies. The patron whose foundation funds the work other people walk past. And the friend who doesn't give up on people even when they've fallen — the one who kept believing in Harvey Dent long after the city had given up. The aspiration isn't the cape. It's the conviction underneath it, and the loyalty to the people he chose to stand with.
